Five days: Bangkok plus Ayutthaya is enough
For a first central Thailand itinerary, use Bangkok as the main base and choose one extension. Our five-day recommendation is an arrival day, two full Bangkok days, an Ayutthaya day trip and a departure or onward-travel day. It delivers both the capital and an ancient-city visit without a hotel move every night.
If your flight lands late or departs early, those are travel days, not extra sightseeing days. With only three usable days, keep two in Bangkok and use the third for Ayutthaya only if ruined temples matter more to you than another city day. These allocations are editorial suggestions, not a tour package or minimum-stay rule.

| Your decision | Choose it for | Allow for |
|---|---|---|
| Ayutthaya | Ruined temples and a former-capital visit from Bangkok | A day trip or one night; group central ruins and allow a vehicle for Wat Chaiwatthanaram |
| Kanchanaburi | River stays and Second World War history | Two nights for a useful separate stay; countryside excursions need additional transport |
| Sukhothai | A historical-park stop on a longer northbound journey | Two nights as a starting allocation; do not insert it as a Bangkok day trip |
Days 1–3: arrive, then give Bangkok two full days
On day 1, transfer to your hotel, eat nearby and leave the major ticketed sights until you have slept. For day 2, group the Grand Palace and Wat Pho with a proper lunch break around the old city. If one major temple is enough, shorten that day rather than replacing the saved time with a cross-city shopping journey.
Use day 3 for the river and Chinatown. That keeps the capital's first two sightseeing days geographically coherent. A hotel near BTS or MRT is useful for wider city travel; an old-city or riverside address suits the temple-and-river plan but needs a closer look at its actual transport access. Choose the area before comparing hotel photographs.
Choose a Bangkok hotel areaDay 4: Ayutthaya, returning to the same Bangkok hotel
Take a morning train or road transfer to Ayutthaya. Start with Wat Mahathat and Wat Ratchaburana, break for lunch, then decide whether to add Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Include Wat Chaiwatthanaram only if you have transport and enough time before its ticket office closes. Do not turn a full day out into an attempt to see all the ruins.
Returning to the same Bangkok hotel avoids carrying your main luggage through the visit. One night in Ayutthaya is the alternative if a quieter afternoon and early morning matter more than avoiding another check-in. It changes the rhythm of the trip rather than adding a different destination.
Day 5 is for departure, onward travel or an easier Bangkok day if your schedule allows it. Do not use a long out-of-town excursion as the buffer before an important flight.
Ayutthaya day-trip and overnight routeSeven days: add a Kanchanaburi stay, not another rushed day trip
With seven usable days, an alternative is days 1–3 in Bangkok, day 4 travelling west to Kanchanaburi, day 5 there, day 6 returning to Bangkok and day 7 for departure or a relaxed final day. This version replaces the Ayutthaya day with a different history-and-river stay; it does not quietly squeeze both into the five-day plan.
TAT identifies the Bridge over the River Kwae, Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the wider river landscape among the area's main visits. A central town base suits these better than a remote raft resort if you want to move around independently. A secluded riverside stay can be the purpose of the trip, but its address may add substantial transfers before every outing.
Erawan and Sai Yok are separate countryside excursions, not sights beside the town bridge. Give one of them its own day if that is the priority and extend the stay or remove another activity. This outline does not promise current waterfall access, swimming conditions or a particular train excursion; those require a current park or service check before booking.
TAT: Kanchanaburi geography and main visitor placesWhen Sukhothai belongs in the route
Sukhothai is a different ancient-capital stop, with monuments from the 13th and 14th centuries within the UNESCO-listed historical landscape. Choose it when you want a dedicated historical-park visit and are continuing through the country, rather than because a map makes it look like a small detour from Bangkok.
A sensible starting allocation is two nights: arrive and settle in, spend a full day at the historical park, then continue. That is extra time on top of the Bangkok and Ayutthaya plan. Confirm the actual intercity connection before booking the hotel; a northbound direction on the map is not proof of a direct through-train. On a first week-long visit, choosing Ayutthaya or Kanchanaburi is usually more useful than trying to add all three inland stops.
UNESCO: Sukhothai and associated historic townsLink central Thailand to Chiang Mai without losing a day twice
If Chiang Mai is next, decide whether you want a sleeper train or a flight before fixing your final Bangkok hotel night. An overnight train and a Bangkok hotel on the same night are different accommodation choices; an early flight also uses time getting to the correct airport.
Keep the route simple: Bangkok with an Ayutthaya excursion, then Chiang Mai is coherent. Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and back is a western extension. Sukhothai is a separate northbound stop requiring its own connection plan. Pick the route that matches the holiday you want rather than linking every name into one hurried chain.
