Andaman coast Thailand: choose Phuket, Ao Nang, Railay or Ko Lanta

Phuket suits a mixed town-and-beach stay, Ao Nang is a mainland base for Krabi outings, Railay adds a boat arrival, and Ko Lanta favours a slower island stay. Choose the base before adding crossings.

Where should you stay on Thailand's Andaman coast?

Choose Phuket for a large island with several beach areas and Old Town as a separate outing. Choose Ao Nang for Krabi's mainland beach facilities and boat excursions. Choose Railay if staying beside its limestone cliffs matters enough to accept a boat transfer. Choose Ko Lanta for several days in one beach area rather than a different island every night. For a first beach leg of three or four nights, our default is one base. With a week, consider two only if they offer something you specifically want. Phuket, Krabi and Ko Lanta belong to the same coastal region, but that does not make the hotel-to-hotel moves negligible. The recommendations below concern base choice, not confirmed ferry departures or hotel availability.

Phuket: a beach stay and a town stay are different bookings

Phuket's official guide lists Patong, Karon, Kamala, Kata and Mai Khao among its beach areas, as well as Phuket Old Town. Start with what you want to do on ordinary days, not the island name. If most days mean time near your accommodation and beach, search that beach area first. If architecture and town evenings are the priority, examine Old Town and accept that a beach visit is a separate outing. Phuket is the stronger shortlist here for a group that wants different kinds of land-based days as well as the coast. That is useful when a boat excursion cannot run. It does not make all its beaches interchangeable or mean that staying anywhere on Phuket puts you near every activity. The tourism authority's beach-flag warning also matters: a beach being popular is not a guarantee that swimming is appropriate that day.

Ao Nang or Railay: choose flexibility or the setting at your doorstep

Ao Nang has a concentration of hotels, restaurants, shops and tour businesses. TAT identifies it as a major starting point for boat trips to nearby islands and the Phra Nang peninsula. Use it when you want a mainland beach base and the option to take an excursion without making every hotel change a crossing. Krabi town and Ao Nang are different places; do not book a town address while assuming it is on Ao Nang's beach strip. Railay is the more specific stay: choose it because you want time around Railay West, Railay East and Phra Nang. The official Railay guide describes passenger-boat access from Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara. Ask the accommodation which landing and final access your booking uses, particularly if you have bulky luggage or limited mobility. A flight arrival plus a road transfer plus a boat is a different arrival from reaching an Ao Nang hotel by road. For a short stay with a fixed onward flight, Ao Nang is our simpler default. A Railay stay makes more sense when you are happy to build arrival and departure around the boat leg. If you stay in Ao Nang instead, Railay can be an outing when conditions and services allow; you do not need to change hotels solely to see it.

Ko Lanta: pick a beach you want to stay around

Ko Lanta Yai is a long island rather than a compact beach village. TAT describes a north-south road, several beaches and Saladan as the arrival area for car-ferry and boat visitors, with a concentration of services there. That makes the beach address and the onward transfer meaningful parts of the accommodation choice. A room farther along the island can suit a quiet stay without being convenient for repeated trips back to the arrival area. Choose Lanta when several days around one beach sound better than changing islands. It is a reasonable shortlist for couples or families wanting a slower pace, but the island label alone does not prove child-friendly beach conditions, accessible paths or easy walking to dinner. For a no-scooter holiday, compare the actual nearby restaurants and transport arrangement before booking. Do not budget only for the fare to the island and ignore the final journey to your hotel.

Season and park access are separate from your hotel booking

TAT's regional weather guide places the Andaman coast's southwest-monsoon heavy-storm period broadly between April and October. November to February is a starting window for comparing an inland-and-Andaman trip, not a guarantee of calm seas. A hotel stay with things to do on land is less dependent on daily sailings than an island-hopping itinerary. The official Ko Lanta guide says smaller islands and dive areas around Mu Koh Lanta National Park are typically closed in the May-October monsoon period. That is a broad seasonal warning, not a dated opening notice for this year. Staying on Ko Lanta does not establish that Ko Rok, Ko Haa or a particular dive site is open. Do not make a protected-area excursion the sole reason for a non-refundable booking until the relevant park has confirmed the dates. This guide deliberately does not supply a current park-opening calendar or repeat the Railay page's undated fare as a live price. A general destination page can establish geography and the usual access method without proving today's charge, landing conditions or sailing programme.

How to divide three nights or a week

For three nights, use Phuket or Ao Nang as one base and leave the middle days for the place itself plus an optional outing. For three nights on Lanta or Railay, first make sure the arrival and departure leave enough usable time; avoid turning both ends into a chain of tight connections. These are pacing recommendations, not transport timetables. For a week, staying in one place is still valid. If you want two bases, Ao Nang plus Ko Lanta gives you a mainland Krabi stay followed by a slower island stay. Allocate a transfer day between them rather than advertising seven full beach days. Phuket plus a Krabi base is another option if you specifically want both; compare the complete move before adding it. Do not add an overnight island solely because a tour happens to visit it. For an important flight home, our conservative recommendation is to finish near the departure gateway rather than rely on an unprotected boat-to-flight connection the same day. The necessary buffer depends on the actual service and booking conditions, so this is not an operator-approved minimum connection time.

Still deciding between the Andaman and Gulf?

Choose your dates before settling the coast question. July and November have different implications on the two sides, and a Gulf island is not a nearby extra stop on an Andaman itinerary. Use the regional calendar to choose the coast, then use this guide to choose the base.

Compare Phuket with Samui and Tao

If the question is still which island best fits your holiday style, compare Phuket with Ko Samui and Ko Tao before building a cross-country route. Their activities and arrival requirements matter as much as the beach photographs.
