Gulf of Thailand islands: Samui, Phangan or Tao?

Choose Ko Samui for a varied beach holiday, Ko Phangan for a beach-area-led stay, or Ko Tao when diving and snorkelling are the priority. One island can fill a short trip; a week usually needs no more than two.

Which Gulf island should you choose?

For a first Gulf beach stay, shortlist Ko Samui if you want varied activities as well as beaches. Choose Ko Phangan when a particular beach area appeals more than a full island circuit. Choose Ko Tao when time on or under the water is the main reason for travelling. These recommendations cover the Samui–Phangan–Tao group, not every island in the Gulf of Thailand. With three or four nights, stay on one island. With seven nights, choose one or two. All three work better as a longer, deliberate island trip than as a hurried addition after Bangkok and northern Thailand. A hotel change consumes time even when the islands look close on the map.

Ko Samui: choose the beach area before the room

TAT lists Chaweng, Lamai and Taling Ngam among Samui’s beaches, and describes Bo Phut’s converted Chinese shophouses. These are separate accommodation searches, not interchangeable addresses. Compare the room’s immediate surroundings: a quiet resort and a base for walking out to restaurants solve different problems. Samui is our default shortlist for travellers who want a beach holiday with cooking classes, yoga or other land-based activities alongside time by the sea; TAT identifies these among its activities. That is useful if a boat outing is cancelled. It does not establish that a specific class runs on your dates or that all beaches have safe swimming conditions. Budget for local transfers if your plans extend beyond your chosen area.

Ko Phangan: the party is one reason to visit, not the whole island

TAT describes Phangan as north of Samui and identifies Rin Nok, Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi among its beaches. Its official overview explicitly covers both party visits and quiet beach holidays. Decide which trip you want before comparing rooms. A booking for a beach retreat should not depend on the island’s nightlife reputation. If an event is the reason for travelling, confirm its specific dates and location before buying transport. If it is not, compare the accommodation’s beach, nearby food options and arrival transfer rather than assuming every part of Phangan will be noisy. The ferry ticket gets you to the island; it does not necessarily get you to a room across it.

Ko Tao: stay for the water activities, not to tick off another island

TAT places Tao north of Phangan and highlights Sairee Beach, snorkelling and scuba diving. For a diving-led stay, begin with the dive centre and the programme’s actual duration, then choose accommodation that makes meeting it straightforward. For a non-diving stay, decide whether you want time around Sairee, a quieter bay or organised boat outings. Do not turn a multi-day course into a single excursion day in your itinerary. Diving also affects the onward flight plan: obtain the appropriate post-dive no-fly interval from your qualified training provider and build it into the booking before paying. This guide does not set a medical clearance interval. A small island is not a promise that every beach-to-hotel journey is a short, easy walk.

A sensible island sequence

The broad south-to-north order is Samui, Phangan, Tao. Lomprayah’s own route guide describes this sequence and the reverse approach from Bangkok via Tao. Use that geography to avoid returning to an island solely to change hotels again. Your departure gateway still matters more than an attractive line on a map. For seven nights, our suggested split is four nights on Samui and three on Phangan for a varied holiday followed by a second beach area. If diving is the purpose, use four nights on Tao and three on Samui instead, with the order set by the flight and diving requirements. For ten nights focused on island travel, three on Samui, three on Phangan and four on Tao is a possible allocation; reverse it if the booked arrival and exit work better that way. These are editorial night budgets, not packaged trips or guaranteed sailing combinations. Lomprayah advertises mainland connections from Chumphon, Surat Thani and Donsak as well as bus-and-boat routes from Bangkok. Compare the full journey, including the actual pier and onward hotel transfer. A mainland airport, town and ferry pier are distinct points; a low airfare alone cannot tell you the total journey time or cost.

When to go, and when to simplify

The tourism authority’s regional climate guide puts the heaviest rain on this Gulf coast broadly between September and December, later than the Andaman southwest-monsoon pattern. February–April is TAT’s suggested visiting window for Tao. July or August may put the Gulf ahead of an Andaman island-hopping plan on your shortlist, but that is a seasonal comparison, not a promise of calm water. In wetter months, one base with usable land-based alternatives is less dependent on repeated crossings. Keep an important flight separate from an unprotected same-day ferry connection; our conservative choice is a buffer night at the flight gateway. The correct connection allowance depends on the actual ticket, transfer and conditions. General route pages do not prove a particular departure is running.

What to compare in the price

Compare the complete basket: the mainland or inter-island fare, any airport-to-pier segment, pier-to-hotel transport, luggage conditions and the cost of a buffer night. A combined ticket may include some of these legs without including all of them. Keep local transport and planned water activities separate from the room rate. We do not quote a universal Gulf ferry fare: the islands, departure points and dates differ, and an undated fare would not be a useful booking answer. Use the operator’s date-specific search once you know your route.

Choosing between the Gulf and Andaman?

Compare the coasts for your travel month before putting Phuket and Samui in the same short itinerary. They are different regional travel legs. Choose one first, then add a second coast only if it earns the travel day.
