Is Doi Inthanon worth a day from Chiang Mai?
Choose Doi Inthanon if you want a mountain day with forest, waterfalls and higher-elevation stops. Keep the whole day for it rather than adding it after Doi Suthep. The summit visit is not the same outing as a longer guided nature walk: choose the walking component first, then compare transport and stops.
Stay in Chiang Mai for a single day trip. An overnight in the park area makes more sense when you want more time for walking or an early mountain start, but it creates another accommodation and luggage move. For a short first visit, a return trip from the same city hotel is the simpler choice. These are pacing recommendations, not a claim that every listed stop is open on your date.
TAT: Doi Inthanon National ParkKew Mae Pan: the closure changes your choice
The National Park Office closure table linked by TAT lists Kew Mae Pan, written as Kio Mae Pan in the table, and Lan Sadet waterfall as annually closed from 1 June to 31 October. The Doi Inthanon row was checked against the original table on 26 October 2026. Do not book an October trip on the assumption that this walk is available.
A November date falls outside that scheduled closure, but the calendar alone is not confirmation that the trail has reopened after rain or repairs. If this walk is your reason for visiting, have the provider confirm current park permission before accepting a non-refundable hiking booking. A generic summit tour is not an equivalent replacement. The closure applies to named attractions, not automatically to every road and stop in the national park.

| Your decision | Road-based sightseeing | Walking-focused visit |
|---|---|---|
| Main reason to choose it | Summit area, pagodas and a waterfall without making a longer hike the centre of the day | Time on a named nature trail rather than a succession of short vehicle stops |
| What to specify | Which summit-area and waterfall stops are included, and how long you spend outside the vehicle | Exact trail name, current access, guide arrangements and walking time |
| Main compromise | Much of the day still involves driving; a summit stop does not provide a ridge walk | A substantial walk leaves less time for other stops; closed trails cannot be replaced by a promise |
| Best transport fit | A shared sightseeing tour or a private car with an agreed stop list | A walking-specific tour or a private arrangement with the required local guiding |
Summit, Ang Ka and Kew Mae Pan are different stops
TAT identifies Doi Inthanon as Thailand’s highest mountain, at 2,565 metres, and lists Ang Ka and Kew Mae Pan as separate nature trails. It also lists the two Great Holy Relics Pagodas and Wachirathan waterfall among the park’s visitor attractions. Do not read a summit-and-pagodas itinerary as a promise to walk Kew Mae Pan.
TAT’s March 2026 description calls Kew Mae Pan an approximately three-kilometre guided walk through forest, grassland and high ridgelines. That describes its character, not a personal fitness assessment or today’s opening status. If a provider offers another trail, ask for its actual name; “two hours trekking” does not identify the route or establish that it is Kew Mae Pan.
TAT: Kew Mae Pan guided-walk descriptionA practical road-based day plan
Leave Chiang Mai with the return journey already arranged. Treat the drive out and back as part of the excursion, not as time you can also spend sightseeing in the city. For a sightseeing-focused visit, agree a route built around the summit area and Ang Ka, the pagodas and Wachirathan waterfall, subject to the day’s park restrictions.
Keep the high mountain stops together rather than paying for a loose list of attractions without an order. Include lunch and comfort stops in the booked duration. If you add a substantial guided walk, remove another stop instead of keeping the same sightseeing list and compressing the walk.
Avoid a tightly timed flight, train or long-distance bus after the outing. Keep an evening in Chiang Mai or leave the following morning. This suggested sequence is a way to discuss an itinerary with a provider, not a timed departure or a guarantee that each stop will operate.
TAT: named Doi Inthanon visitor stopsShared tour, private car or independent transport?
A shared tour is the starting point if you want one booking to cover the out-and-back journey. Compare its named trail and stop list, pickup zone, return arrangements and inclusions. A sightseeing tour can be the wrong purchase if your priority is a long walk, even when both listings say Doi Inthanon.
A private car suits travellers who want to reduce stops, spend longer at one place or return earlier. Agree the complete return trip and waiting time. A driver is not automatically a walking guide, and an agreed car price is not automatically an all-inclusive park ticket.
Do not treat reaching Chom Thong or another point below the mountain as having solved the whole excursion. The summit area, waterfall stops and trailheads still need connecting transport. This guide does not establish a through public-bus service between those stops. For a short visit without your own vehicle, use a return arrangement rather than improvising separate lifts.
TAT: park location in Chom ThongBudget for admissions, transport and any guiding separately
Ask for a written total that separates return transport, national-park entry, vehicle charges, pagoda admission where applicable, trail guiding and meals. Compare quotes for the same itinerary and passenger group. A low transport-only price is not directly comparable with a tour that includes admission and lunch.
We are not quoting a current park or guide tariff here: the tourism attraction page contains inconsistent adult and child fee labels, so it is not a reliable basis for your payable total. Obtain the current entrance amount from the park or have the provider state exactly which admissions are included before paying. The park contact listed by TAT is +66 53 286 728.
TAT: park contact and visitor informationClothing, weather and what to drop if conditions are poor
Pack a warm layer and rain protection for the higher stops even when Chiang Mai feels warm. Wear shoes suitable for wet paths if a walk is part of the day. Treat mist as a possible limit on views, not a promised sunrise spectacle; TAT describes cool conditions and fog on the mountain.
If conditions make a trail unsuitable or the park closes it, follow the restriction rather than seeking another entrance. For a city-based trip, the useful fallback is to move the mountain day or keep a Chiang Mai day, not to force a hiking booking into an unchanged schedule. Air quality also needs its own check before an outdoor-heavy northern stay.
