The practical route: road transport between two separate cities
Greenbus is the straightforward scheduled option from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. The operator gives an approximate road distance of 180–185 km and a typical bus journey of 3–4 hours along the Highway 118 corridor. That is terminal-to-terminal time, not the full journey from your Old City or Nimman hotel.
A private transfer is more useful when hotel pickup, luggage handling or a planned White Temple stop matters. Do not assume it is faster simply because it is private: pickup location, road conditions and stops change the total. There is no direct passenger railway between the cities; a Chiang Mai train arrival does not put you on a through rail service to Chiang Rai.

| Your decision | Greenbus | Private transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Independent city-to-city travel on a scheduled departure | A group, door-to-door trip or an explicitly agreed sightseeing stop |
| Pickup | The booked terminal; arrange your own hotel-to-station leg | The precise hotel or address in the written quote |
| Arrival | The terminal stated on your ticket, then a local hotel transfer | The agreed Chiang Rai hotel or other endpoint |
| Cost basis | Per passenger plus local transfers and any booking charge | Vehicle total; establish luggage capacity, stops, waiting and extras |
| Sightseeing | A bus journey is not a guided attraction circuit | Only stops, time and admissions explicitly included in the quote |
Leave from Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3, not the railway station
Greenbus identifies Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3 (Arcade) for applicable services on this route. Use that specific terminal name in your local transfer booking, and follow the terminal and boarding instructions on the ticket. Being dropped somewhere in the wider Arcade area does not identify your departure bay.
From an Old City, Nimman or riverside hotel, budget a separate vehicle trip to the terminal and a boarding margin. If you are arriving on the overnight train from Bangkok, you still need to travel from the railway station to the bus terminal. Avoid buying a departure that depends on the train arriving exactly on time.
Greenbus: boarding points and preparationChoose the dated departure, not a recycled timetable
Greenbus’s schedule page, marked updated 15 September 2026, lists Chiang Mai departures including 07:00, 11:00 and 13:30 in its everyday Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai row. It lists 06:00 only on Mondays and 16:00 only on Fridays and Sundays. These are examples from the published schedule, not a live seat check or a promise that every departure has the same class.
The operator directs online bookings to FairFair and says advance booking is available up to 30 days, subject to availability. Its current route guide names V-Class and X-Class but does not establish identical seating or facilities on all trips. Select your date and inspect the actual service before paying; a general class label is not a vehicle guarantee.
Greenbus: dated timetable and weekday restrictionsCheck Chiang Rai Terminal 1 versus Terminal 2 before paying
The operator identifies Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1 for applicable Chiang Mai services. Its timetable separately labels a Chiang Mai–Chiang Rai 2–Chiang Khong service. Do not select a similarly named destination merely because it has a convenient departure. Read the arrival terminal printed in the booking.
For a central Chiang Rai hotel, Terminal 1 is the useful search starting point. If your selected trip arrives at Terminal 2, price and allow for that separate onward transfer; the terminal number is not interchangeable. Keep the first evening simple rather than booking a timed museum entry immediately after the scheduled arrival.
Greenbus: arrival-terminal qualificationBuild the full cost before choosing
For the bus, compare the selected fare plus booking charges, your Chiang Mai hotel-to-terminal ride and the Chiang Rai terminal-to-hotel leg. For a group, add all passenger fares before comparing a private vehicle’s total. A low fare on an old agent article is not a current bookable price.
For a private transfer with a White Temple visit, request the exact pickup, hotel drop-off, waiting allowance, luggage capacity and whether admission is included. A point-to-point transfer price does not buy a sightseeing day. This guide has not verified a current private-car quote or a dated bus fare, so it does not publish a made-up all-in cost.
Greenbus: live service and fare selectionKeep the transfer day separate from the main sightseeing day
A morning bus leaves more flexibility after check-in than a late-afternoon one. Still, plan the main White Temple, Blue Temple and Baan Dam outing for the next full day if those sights are important. With a private car, an agreed en-route stop can replace part of that next-day circuit; it should not be added to a bus ticket as if the driver will wait.
For a return journey tied to a Chiang Mai flight or train, account for the bus, possible road delay and the transfer from Arcade to the airport or railway station. Do not book the connection against the shortest advertised running time. Use a previous-night return when a missed onward departure would be costly.
