Start with White Sand, Klong Prao or Kai Bae
For a first Koh Chang stay without a scooter, start with White Sand Beach if you want beach services and food options close together, Klong Prao for a beachfront resort, or Kai Bae for a mix of restaurants and accommodation. Choose Lonely Beach for its traveller and nightlife scene rather than its name: it is not the default choice for quiet nights.
Choose Bailan or the eastern Salak Phet area only when the particular hotel and quieter setting matter more than easy access to the main beach strips. Keep one base for a normal five- or six-night stay. Moving hotels along the west coast usually costs more useful holiday time than it saves in outings.

| Your decision | Choose it for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| White Sand Beach | A convenient first stay with restaurants, shops and beach accommodation | A developed strip; pick the exact end and room position for quieter nights |
| Klong Prao | A resort-led beach stay, including families using hotel facilities | A broad area: the room-to-beach and room-to-main-road walks vary |
| Kai Bae | Restaurant choice and a mix of small stays and larger resorts | Beach frontage varies; some central stretches narrow at high tide |
| Lonely Beach | Meeting travellers and going out in the village | Late noise, beach versus village location, and winding southern road access |
| Bailan | A quieter hotel-led alternative south of Lonely Beach | Less convenient for a daily circuit of northern restaurants and beaches |
| Salak Phet | An eastern bay and village setting rather than a west-coast beach strip | Different road approach; arrange transport rather than assuming west-coast shared taxis |
White Sand Beach: the simplest starting point
White Sand Beach, also called Hat Sai Khao, is useful when you want a choice of places to eat and shop without making each errand a separate cross-island journey. Bangkok Airways describes more bars, restaurants and shops in the central and southern sections, with a quieter northern part.
Choose a room near the part of the beach you intend to use, not just one listed under White Sand Beach. A roadside room, a hillside room and a beachfront room give different daily routines. For a quiet stay, inspect room placement relative to the main road and evening venues rather than assuming the whole area has one noise level.
White Sand is a better starting search than a remote southern room if you want services nearby. It will not suit someone whose priority is avoiding a developed tourist strip.

Klong Prao works well when the hotel beach and facilities are a large part of the holiday. Centara Koh Chang Tropicana explicitly places itself on Klong Prao Beach with direct beach access and pools. Santhiya's own contact page also places its Koh Chang resort in Klong Prao. These are useful geographic examples, not a tested-hotel ranking or an availability claim.
Klong Prao covers a long stretch, with beach, canal and roadside accommodation rather than one compact centre. A room in this area does not automatically have a short walk both to the sea and to the main-road restaurants. Compare those two walks separately.
Families who expect to spend afternoons at the hotel can reasonably give more weight to a pool, shade and meals on site. Travellers planning to eat out every evening should give more weight to the actual entrance lane and return after dark. Do not assume a straight line on a map gives a public walking route through neighbouring resorts.

Kai Bae is a useful middle option for visitors who want restaurants and a choice of accommodation without choosing Lonely Beach's party area. It has both beachfront resorts and stays around the main road. The Stage's own website identifies its Kai Bae location and pool-oriented accommodation; that area label alone should not be read as a beachfront-room promise.
The local specialist Explore Koh Chang describes two main beach sections and central frontage that can disappear at high tide. If walking straight from your room onto usable sand matters, inspect the exact frontage and access for that property. An attractive sea view does not settle that question.
Kai Bae also sits before the road climbs toward Lonely Beach. It is a sensible base for combining local beach time with occasional outings south, rather than repeatedly travelling over the hill for meals.

Lonely Beach, also called Hat Tha Nam, has a beach section and a separate village area. Explore Koh Chang describes the village and LB Complex as the main nightlife concentrations, with much of the accommodation off the sand. A Lonely Beach address therefore does not mean a beachfront bungalow.
Choose it if meeting other travellers and evenings out are priorities. For sleeping, locate the room relative to the late bars rather than relying on a quiet-looking daytime photograph. Travellers wanting early nights should first compare Klong Prao or a suitable White Sand room instead.
The road from Kai Bae winds over a hill. Budget for the arrival and departure transfer, and do not make a scooter ride after an evening out part of the plan. No particular bar opening, event or cheap room rate is guaranteed by this area recommendation.

Bailan is worth comparing for a quieter hotel-led stay farther south. Accor locates Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway in Bailand Bay, with a pool and several room categories. That confirms the property's location, not that every room faces the sea or that the shoreline suits every swimmer. Choose it for the particular hotel and bay setting, not as a cheaper substitute for a White Sand address.
Bang Bao is the southern stilt village and pier area. Choose a stay there when the village or a confirmed boat departure is central to your plans. Distinguish a pier-side stay from a nearby beach property; the village name does not promise sand outside the room.
Salak Phet is an eastern alternative for a bay-and-village stay, with mangroves among the local outing choices. It is not a west-coast beach base. Arrange the hotel transfer and meals rather than assuming the shared Ao Sapparot–Bang Bao west-coast taxi route serves an eastern room in the same way.
Accor: Mercure Koh Chang Hideaway location and room distinctionsMatch the hotel address to the complete arrival
The regular car-ferry approach reaches Ao Sapparot on the northeast coast from Ao Thammachat on the mainland. From there, White Sand, Klong Prao, Kai Bae and the southern beaches require an island road transfer. Give the transfer provider the exact property and room-party details, not just Koh Chang.
Compare a shared seat with a private vehicle explicitly, including whether the quote covers the ferry, luggage and the hotel's entrance. A secluded room needs a plan for meals as well as arrival. For a short stay, a slightly more expensive room in the area you will actually use can be the better overall choice.
For bookings with children, compare the permitted occupancy and any extra bed and meal charges on your dates. For all stays, inspect cancellation terms, breakfast, the walking route to the beach and the chosen room category. Hotel names here are location examples from public sources; no inspection, partner status or room availability is implied.
