Allow five nights if you want beach time and outings
Koh Chang suits a Thailand trip that has room for a longer island stay: choose one west-coast base, keep a full day for the journey from Bangkok and allow five nights for four full island days. White Sand Beach is convenient for services; Klong Prao suits a resort-led stay; Kai Bae is worth comparing for restaurants and beach time. These are editorial starting points, not minimum-stay rules.
Choose Koh Chang for the combination of beach areas, Klong Plu Waterfall and a trip south to Bang Bao. If you only have two nights between Bangkok commitments, the outward and return journeys leave little time here. Compare Koh Samet instead of treating every eastern island as an equally short Bangkok beach break.
TAT: Koh Chang geography, main visitor areas and highlightsGetting there: the flight lands on the mainland
From Bangkok, the choices are a flight from Suvarnabhumi to Trat followed by a ground transfer and ferry, or a road journey toward Trat and the ferry pier. Bangkok Airways describes the flight as about an hour and the Bangkok–Trat bus or van leg as roughly five to six hours. Neither figure includes the complete hotel-to-hotel trip.
For the regular car-ferry approach, the mainland pier is Ao Thammachat and the Koh Chang arrival is Ao Sapparot on the northeast coast. Bangkok Airways' May 2026 transport guide identifies Ao Thammachat as the operating ferry pier and gives a crossing of around 30–45 minutes. Its older destination article still lists Centrepoint; do not use that older two-pier description to choose a departure.
After landing you still need the road transfer to your beach. Arrange that final leg with the exact hotel name, especially if staying south toward Lonely Beach or Bang Bao. A ticket to Trat bus station, a ticket to the mainland pier and a through-transfer to an island hotel cover different journeys. Start early enough to avoid making the final crossing your only possible connection.
Bangkok Airways: May 2026 transport guide and ferry endpointsUse one base rather than moving down the coast
The main visitor beaches are linked along the west coast. From the north, the useful sequence is White Sand Beach, Klong Prao, Kai Bae, Lonely Beach, Bailan and Bang Bao. Travelling farther south adds road travel; a room near Bang Bao is not a substitute for one near White Sand Beach if your daily plans are in the north.
White songthaew pickup taxis link Ao Sapparot with the west-coast areas toward Bang Bao. Use them or prearranged vehicles rather than building the trip around scooter hire. A shared vehicle and a private charter have different prices and waiting arrangements: agree which you are taking before boarding.
The road beyond Kai Bae crosses steep, winding terrain toward Lonely Beach. Choose a hotel with meals and beach access you can use locally, then group more distant outings. Do not plan an evening walk along the coast road between these beach areas as though they were adjoining pedestrian neighbourhoods.
Bangkok Airways: island transport and west-coast destinationsA five-night plan with four full days
Arrival day: travel to Koh Chang, continue to the hotel and keep the rest of the day local. Do not pay for a non-refundable excursion on the assumption that a short flight means an early beach arrival.
First full day: use the beach at your base and explore its nearby food options. This is also the day to arrange a later outing with the pickup location and return included.
Second full day: make Klong Plu Waterfall the main inland visit if the park is admitting visitors and conditions permit. Keep the remainder around Klong Prao rather than adding the east coast. The waterfall is a national-park visit, not a guaranteed swimming stop; admission and access can change.
Third full day: head south to Kai Bae Viewpoint and Bang Bao village, arranging a vehicle for the outward and return journey. Bang Bao's stilt houses, pier and lighthouse make a different outing from another resort beach. The viewpoint and village are separate stops, so include both in the driver agreement.
Fourth full day: leave a choice between another beach day and an operating boat excursion that fits the weather and your ability. If you book snorkelling or diving, establish the actual departure pier, equipment, experience requirements and cancellation terms. The island's presence in a marine-park region does not establish that every advertised site is accessible.
Departure day: return through the ferry and mainland transfer. Keep a Bangkok night before a separate long-haul flight. This suggested plan has five hotel nights and four full days between the transfer days; it is not a tour product or an opening-hours guarantee.
Bangkok Airways: named Koh Chang attractions; not current park-access certificationWhen to go and what rainy season changes
November–February is the first period to compare for a beach-led Koh Chang trip. March and April are hotter; May–October is the wetter southwest-monsoon period. These are seasonal patterns, not a promise of calm water or sunshine on a particular date.
Keep a rainy-season stay flexible and choose a hotel you would be content to use without daily boat trips. A mainland car ferry and an exposed snorkelling excursion are different services: one operating does not prove the other is suitable. Follow local closures and beach warning flags, and do not enter the sea under a red flag.
If continuing to Koh Mak or Koh Kood, book around an actual dated service rather than assuming a year-round island-hopping chain. Keep Koh Chang as a single-island trip if the required connection is not available.
Bangkok Airways: seasonal pattern for Koh ChangBuild the budget around the complete stay
Separate the Bangkok–Trat road or flight cost, mainland-pier transfer, ferry, island hotel transfer, room, meals and excursions. Then add the return legs. A cheap ferry fare tells you little about the final total if the hotel requires a long private road transfer.
For a non-driving stay, choose the base before comparing room prices: several daily taxis can erase a saving on an isolated room. No current room rate or park tariff is assumed here. Use the actual stay dates and party size, with breakfast, child occupancy, cancellation and transfers compared on the same basis.
