Koh Tao travel guide: beach bases, ferries and a 3-night plan

Stay in Sairee for beach restaurants and dive schools, Mae Haad for the simplest ferry arrival, or Chalok Baan Kao for a quieter southern base. Three nights work for a non-diving visit; give a certification course its own longer stay.

Is Koh Tao worth visiting if you do not dive?

Yes, if you want a small-island stay built around beaches, snorkelling and a boat outing. You do not need a diving course to justify coming. Sairee gives you restaurants and evening beach life; bays such as Tanote and Aow Leuk give you a reason to leave your base for a day.

Choose another island if your priority is a large resort with straightforward airport access and a wide range of inland outings. Koh Tao has no airport: every arrival involves a boat. That extra connection matters more on a two-night break than on a week-long stay. Our suggested three-night visit is editorial pacing, not a minimum imposed by an operator.

Sairee: the practical default for a first stay

Sairee suits travellers who want to walk between their room, meals and a dive centre. The tourism association places the village about a 30–40-minute walk from Mae Haad and recommends the beachside walking street instead of the busier main road. Treat that as an outing after check-in, not a luggage-transfer plan in the heat.

Ask whether a room faces a beach bar, sits behind the village or requires a hillside climb. Those differences are more useful than a hotel simply describing itself as being in Sairee. For a course, match your accommodation to the actual school meeting point: being on the same beach does not mean being next door.

Mae Haad or Chalok: arrival convenience versus a quieter base

Mae Haad is the port village, with restaurants, shops and dive centres. It is a sensible choice for a short stay or an early ferry departure. Pick a room for its actual position relative to the pier and nearby beach rather than assuming that every port-area property has the same surroundings.

Chalok Baan Kao is south of Mae Haad. Its appeal is a quieter bay with places to eat and local diving, rather than access to Sairee nightlife. The tourism association advises a transfer on arrival instead of a long walk with luggage. Choose Chalok if you expect to spend evenings locally; repeated taxis to Sairee weaken the case for staying there.

Getting to Koh Tao: choose the gateway before buying the flight

From Bangkok or the mainland, compare a Chumphon connection with a Surat Thani connection. Chumphon is geographically closer to Koh Tao; the mainland arrival still needs a transfer to the correct ferry pier. A train ticket to Chumphon does not put you at the boat. Compare the complete bus-and-boat or train-plus-transfer journey, not just the first leg.

Flying to Koh Samui is another option, followed by a road transfer to the booked pier and a ferry. From Koh Phangan, use an island-to-island sailing. Lomprayah lists mainland and island connections serving Koh Tao, but the route, pier, check-in and departure must match your travel date. A general route article is not a confirmed sailing.

Arrival on Koh Tao is in Mae Haad. Send your hotel the ferry company and arrival details if you have arranged pickup. For a separate onward flight, our practical recommendation is to leave the island the previous day and sleep near the departure airport. That adds weather and transfer margin; it is not a guarantee against disruption.

A 3-night Koh Tao itinerary without a course

Arrival day: transfer from Mae Haad to your chosen base, settle in and keep the evening local. In Sairee, walk the beachside strip and have dinner nearby. Do not make a paid boat outing depend on an incoming ferry arriving exactly on time.

First full day: make this your water day. Choose a guided round-island snorkelling trip if you want transport and multiple stops handled together, or one bay such as Tanote or Aow Leuk if you prefer to stay put. Ask which stops are included, whether equipment and flotation aids are supplied, and whether Koh Nang Yuan admission is separate. Conditions can change the stops; turtles and sharks are not guaranteed sightings.

Second full day: keep a slower beach day around your base, visit Mae Haad for lunch and an easy local walk, or take a taxi to a different bay. If you want to try scuba, use this day for an introductory session instead of adding it on top of the boat trip. Apply the diving-to-flying interval to your eventual flight, even when a ferry comes first.

Departure day: allow time to get back to Mae Haad and meet the operator’s check-in requirement. A three-night stay gives two full days, so do not sell yourself a third full activity day by counting the arrival and departure twice.

Getting around without hiring a scooter

A no-scooter stay is workable if you book in a main village and group outings instead of crossing the island several times a day. Use walking for local meals, a hotel transfer for arrival, and a taxi or organised boat trip for farther bays. Agree the taxi fare and whether it covers the vehicle or each passenger before setting off; do not assume a published sample fare is a live tariff.

The main road links Sairee, Mae Haad and Chalok, with side roads to the eastern bays. Short map distances do not promise a shaded, level pavement. Koh Tao is not a good place to learn to ride a scooter: TAT specifically urges extreme caution with motorbikes.

When to go and how long to allow for diving

TAT names February–April as a favourable visiting period. Use that as a seasonal preference, not a forecast or a promise of calm crossings. For a boat-dependent trip, retain flexibility around marine weather and avoid making one specific bay or wildlife encounter the only reason to travel.

An Open Water course takes up much of the day with theory, confined-water practice and sea dives. Plan the course schedule before allocating sightseeing. A stay of about five nights is a more useful starting point than squeezing training between two ferries, but the school’s actual orientation, finish time and your next flight decide the final plan.
