Best time to visit Thailand: choose the coast, then the month

November is not the same proposition in Chiang Mai and Ko Samui. Match your dates to inland Thailand, the Andaman coast or the Gulf islands before booking the beach leg.

The useful answer is regional

For a first trip combining Bangkok, the north and an Andaman beach base, November to February is a sensible starting window to investigate: inland Thailand has its cooler season then, while the main southwest-monsoon storm period on the Andaman side broadly falls earlier in the year. That is a planning overlap, not a promise of dry days. Do not carry the same recommendation across to Ko Samui, Ko Phangan and Ko Tao. The Tourism Authority of Thailand places the Gulf islands’ heaviest rain broadly between September and December. If the beach is the main reason for travelling, choose that region first and work the city stops around it.

If your dates are fixed, change the trip rather than the forecast

For a July or August holiday, compare the Gulf islands before committing to an Andaman island-hopping route. The reason is the difference in regional rain patterns, not a guarantee that the Gulf will be dry. A base with activities that do not require a boat gives you more options if a sea excursion falls through. For a November holiday, distinguish Bangkok or a northern city stop from the southern east coast. You can have an attractive inland season and a wet Gulf beach leg in the same itinerary. For September or October, accept that both coastal windows can be awkward: avoid making every important day dependent on a crossing.

For Ko Tao, narrow the regional answer further

The official Ko Tao guide specifically identifies February–April as its preferred visiting period. That is more useful for a Tao-focused trip than a country-wide “best month” list. It does not establish visibility at a particular dive site, a ferry departure or a safe swimming day. Confirm the current programme and conditions with the relevant operator. If diving is the whole point, choose the operator and suitable course or experience before building a tightly packed island sequence. Do not book a non-refundable chain of connections on the assumption that a favourable climate average guarantees each activity.

Keep climate, forecast and access as three separate checks

Use this calendar to shortlist dates months ahead. Near departure, check the Thai Meteorological Department’s current forecast and warnings for the actual area. Before any crossing, check the boat operator’s sailing information. A hotel being open does not prove that an excursion or protected-area landing is operating. National-park opening dates and individual marine excursions need their own dated check; this guide does not promise access to a park or island on any particular day. Follow local warnings and beach flags rather than treating a dry-looking morning as permission to swim.

Choose the island after the seasonal shortlist

Once you have a coast and a workable month, compare the island’s character and the travel it needs. Phuket, Samui and Tao answer different holiday briefs; collecting all three is not a requirement for a good Thailand trip.

How much time should you give the north?

For a short northern stop, use four days and three nights in Chiang Mai. With a week, add Chiang Rai as a two-night stay rather than a return excursion squeezed into the shorter visit. Cooler-season dates are useful for planning, but northern air quality needs its own current check. The itinerary explains the city and mountain-day choices.
