Best islands in Thailand: pick a base, not a checklist
Compare Phuket, Ko Samui and Ko Tao by beach style, non-beach options and the travel you want to take on. Start with one coast rather than a cross-country island collection.
Three different starting points
Choose Phuket if you want an Andaman island with multiple beach areas and an old-town alternative to the sand. Choose Ko Samui if you want a Gulf island with a broad range of activities and beaches. Put Ko Tao first when diving or snorkelling is central to the trip and you are willing to plan around a boat arrival. These are three starting points, not a claim that they are the only islands worth visiting. The useful shortlist is the one that fits your dates and leaves enough time at the base. A small island is not automatically an easier arrival, and a large island is not automatically one interchangeable resort strip.

| Compare | Phuket | Ko Samui | Ko Tao |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coast | Andaman, west of the southern peninsula | Gulf of Thailand | Gulf of Thailand |
| Best reason to shortlist it | Several beach areas plus Phuket Old Town | Beach choice plus cooking, yoga and other activities | A trip organised around diving, snorkelling and bays |
| Base decision | Pick a beach area deliberately; Old Town serves a different day plan | Compare Chaweng, Lamai, Bo Phut and quieter beach areas | Choose the bay and access to the dive centre or boat meeting point |
| Weather question | How does the April–October Andaman storm pattern affect these dates? | Do these dates overlap the September–December Gulf rain peak? | Check Gulf seasonality and the official February–April visiting guidance |
| Main trade-off | The island name alone does not choose your neighbourhood | Activities are spread across a varied island, not a single walkable beach | Boat arrival and sea-based activities need contingency time |
Phuket: choose the beach area, not just the island
The official destination guide lists beach areas including Patong, Karon, Kamala, Kata and Mai Khao, as well as Old Town’s architecture. Start by deciding whether the trip is mainly beach time or a mix of town and coast. A stay chosen for evenings in Old Town is a different choice from one chosen for stepping out onto a beach. Our recommendation is to favour a base with a satisfying land-based day of its own if you are travelling in the Andaman storm window. Do not choose accommodation on the assumption that every day will be a boat excursion. The tourism authority also highlights beach warning flags: assess swimming locally, not from an island-wide weather label.

Samui’s official guide describes beaches including Chaweng, Lamai and Taling Ngam, the converted Chinese shophouses around Bo Phut, and activities such as cooking classes and yoga. That makes it a reasonable shortlist for a group mixing beach days with time away from the water. It does not mean every activity is beside every hotel. Choose the evening area you want, then check the actual hotel-to-beach and hotel-to-meeting-point journeys. Do not assume that an island small enough to travel around is convenient to cross repeatedly. For a no-scooter trip, establish how you will reach dinner and activities before comparing room prices.
Tourism Authority of Thailand: Ko SamuiCompare the Gulf islands together
Samui, Phangan and Tao offer different bases and arrival chains. Compare their roles before adding a second Gulf stay; the regional guide separates airport access, boat dependencies and the nights lost to moving.

Tao’s official guide puts diving, snorkelling, Sairee Beach and nearby Nang Yuan at the centre of its appeal. It also points to boat access from Chumphon. That makes Tao a more purposeful choice when you want several days around the water than when you simply want to add another name to a short itinerary. Check which pier your actual boat uses, how you will reach your accommodation and where your dive or snorkel programme meets. This page is not a ferry timetable or a certification recommendation. Use a suitably qualified provider and do not touch coral or marine life. For a traveller who does not want a boat arrival, remove Tao from the shortlist rather than trying to compress the transfer.
Tourism Authority of Thailand: Ko Tao and arrival guidanceHow many islands should you fit in?
For a short beach break, our default is one base. For a longer beach leg, add a second island only when it solves a real preference: a different bay setting, a particular water activity or a change of pace. Count checkout, the transfer to the pier, waiting, the crossing and the onward journey—not just the advertised sailing time. Do not jump from Phuket to the Samui–Tao group merely because all three are labelled islands. They belong to different coasts. Price and plan the complete transfer before treating the move as a beach day. If your return flight is important, consider spending the preceding night at its departure gateway rather than depending on an unprotected boat-to-flight connection. That is a conservative planning recommendation, not a claim about an operator’s minimum connection time.
Let the month settle the coast question
The Andaman and Gulf rainy seasons are not interchangeable. Check the regional calendar before choosing hotels, and remember that September–October can overlap unfavourable broad patterns on both sides. A favourable month still cannot promise calm seas.
Choose the coast for your travel monthIf you choose the Andaman, compare the mainland too
An island is not compulsory for a beach stay. Ao Nang offers a mainland Krabi base with optional boat days; Railay and Ko Lanta have different arrival and local-transport trade-offs. Compare those bases with Phuket before paying for extra crossings.
