Choose Ao Nang for the simplest first beach base
For the five-night coast block in a Bangkok–Chiang Mai–Krabi trip, our default is Ao Nang: arrive by road, keep one room and choose optional boat outings. Choose Railay if staying on its peninsula is worth making a boat transfer part of arrival and departure. Choose Krabi Town when town evenings and food matter more than sleeping beside a beach.
These are different bases, not neighbourhood names for the same strip. Ao Nang is on the mainland, Railay has a boat-access hotel arrival, and Krabi Town is not the Ao Nang beachfront. Pick the base before comparing the cheapest rooms.

| Your decision | Choose it when | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Ao Nang | You want beach-area restaurants and optional trips without a boat-dependent hotel change. | Check the exact walk and neighbouring venues; an Ao Nang address does not put every room on the beach. |
| Railay | Time on the peninsula is a reason to stay, not just an excursion. | Luggage, boat arrival and departure conditions are part of the hotel journey. |
| Krabi Town | A town stay and evening markets interest you more than a beach outside the room. | Beach and peninsula visits add separate transport; it is not the same base as Ao Nang. |
| Noppharat Thara side | You prefer that beach setting to the central Ao Nang strip. | Use the exact entrance and meeting point, not the district label, to assess everyday walks. |
Ao Nang: a base with optional boat days
TAT describes Ao Nang as a strip of hotels, restaurants and bars and a launching point for nearby islands and the Phra Nang peninsula. That makes it useful for travellers who want to retain mainland room access even if a planned water outing changes.[2]
Choose accommodation around the evenings you want and the actual pickup arrangement. A property farther inland can add repeated road trips; a room directly beside a late venue may suit going out better than early nights. Do not infer quiet or step-free access from the destination name.

Railay Village Resort describes its setting as only accessible by boat and offers combined van-and-longtail transfers, with advance booking required. This first-party example establishes why a Railay hotel is a different arrival purchase from a road-access Ao Nang room.[3]
Obtain the mainland meeting point, boat landing, luggage handling and the final route to the actual property. A West Railay hotel and an East Railay landing can add a cross-peninsula luggage stage. Late flights need explicit transfer arrangements; do not assume a shared daytime boat is waiting after dark. This guide does not reproduce the resort’s mixed transport-price tables as a universal ferry fare.
[3] Railay Village Resort: boat-only access and transfer arrangementsKrabi Town: choose it for the town, not a beachfront label
TAT distinguishes Krabi’s town markets from Ao Nang’s seaside strip. Use Krabi Town when meals, town visits and a road-based stay are the point. It is a weaker match for a short trip built around walking from your hotel to the Ao Nang beach every day.[2]
For a single arrival or departure night, price the whole sequence to your next base. A cheaper town room is not automatically a saving after adding a second checkout, transfer and luggage move. The tourism page includes market days, but an old overview does not guarantee a particular market operating on your visit.
What to check for a no-scooter stay
Map the property entrance to dinner, the beach you actually want and the booked excursion meeting point. For Railay, add both landing-to-hotel routes and an alternative when a planned boat cannot operate. For Ao Nang, distinguish hotel collection from a meeting point on the strip.
With children, mobility needs or several suitcases, a road-access base can remove one boarding stage. That is a practical reason to prefer Ao Nang, not proof that every hotel has easy access. Ask the property about steps, surfaces and arrival help for the specific room.
Use one base for the five-night coastal leg
For the existing two-week itinerary, keep all five coastal nights in Ao Nang unless a Railay stay is itself a main priority. Visit Railay as an optional day instead of checking out solely to collect a second hotel. If staying on Railay, revise both transfer days and the final flight buffer rather than copying the mainland arrival plan.

An attractive room does not settle the Andaman seasonal question. Compare the regional weather trade-offs before fixing a boat-heavy stay; do not apply Samui’s Gulf pattern to Krabi.
