The best Phuket area depends on your ordinary evening
For a first beach holiday, start with Kata or Karon. Choose Patong if bars and late evenings are part of the plan, Kamala if you prefer a beach base north of Patong, or Phuket Old Town if food, cafés and historic streets matter more than having a beach nearby. Old Town is not a beach resort, and a Phuket address alone tells you little about the journey to the places you want to visit.
For a short stay, choose one area and visit the others as outings. Do not change hotels between neighbouring west-coast beaches just to try a different stretch of sand. A split between Old Town and a beach base has a clearer purpose: different mornings and evenings, rather than two similar check-ins. The recommendations here concern areas, not inspected hotels or available rooms.

| Your decision | Choose it for | The booking compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Kata | A beach-first stay with nearby food and access to the west-coast bus route | Kata Yai and Kata Noi are different bays; verify the actual beach walk |
| Karon | A long beach and a choice of accommodation along its road | A central map pin does not establish a short walk to your preferred dinner area |
| Patong | Nightlife, shopping and a large concentration of visitor services | Choose the exact street carefully if you want early nights |
| Kamala | A west-coast beach base north of Patong | A hillside or outlying property can be a different stay from the beach village |
| Phuket Old Town | Historic streets, local food and town evenings on foot | Beach visits need transport; the airport-to-Rawai beach bus is not an Old Town service |
Kata or Karon for a first beach stay
Kata is our starting shortlist when the plan is mainly beach time and meals nearby. Check whether the listing means Kata Yai or Kata Noi, then trace the walk from the property entrance to the actual public beach access. A room with a sea view can still be uphill or away from the convenient walking route.
Karon is the alternative if you prefer its long beach and find a better-positioned room there. TAT places Karon south of Patong and describes accommodation and restaurants along the beachfront road. Decide whether you want to be near the northern Karon Circle area or towards the Kata end before comparing room prices across the whole bay. A long beach is useful for walking, but it can also mean a longer walk between your room and dinner.
Both are on Phuket Smart Bus's airport-to-Rawai route. That makes a no-scooter arrival possible without proving that every hotel has an easy last leg. For either area, a reasonably located room with food within walking distance is more useful than a lower nightly rate that needs repeated taxi rides.
TAT Hat Karon: beach geography, accommodation and seasonal water warningPatong for nightlife, with a deliberate street choice
Choose Patong when you want a busy resort centre with restaurants, shopping and evenings out. TAT describes it as a developed visitor town rather than just a beach. Staying here avoids turning every Patong night into a separate return journey from another bay.
If nightlife is the priority, compare the walking route to the Bangla Road area. If sleep is the priority, do not book beside it solely because the map looks central. Look at the immediate neighbouring venues and the room's position, not only the hotel's general claim to be quiet. A farther-out room can reduce proximity to the busiest streets but may also remove the walking convenience you chose Patong for.
Patong is a poor default if your ideal evening is an early meal followed by bed and you have no interest in its shops or nightlife. Kata, Karon or Kamala deserve a closer look in that case. None of those names, however, guarantees a quiet room.
TAT Phuket: Patong's visitor services and town settingKamala when you want a different beach base from Patong
Kamala is north of Patong on the west coast, with a stop on the airport-to-Rawai Smart Bus route. Shortlist it if you want to stay around its beach rather than use Patong as your everyday centre. You can visit Patong without sleeping there.
The key distinction is between a room near the beach village and a property on the surrounding hills or farther along the coast. Trace the entrance-to-beach and entrance-to-dinner journeys separately. A resort may suit days spent largely on site while being a poor choice for someone who expects to walk out to several restaurants every night.
For a family or anyone avoiding scooters, use that walking test before treating Kamala as automatically easier than Kata or Karon. A direct airport bus stop is helpful only if the final route to the property works with your luggage and mobility needs.
Phuket Smart Bus: Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata route orderOld Town for food and historic streets, not beach access
Choose Phuket Old Town when you want to start the day on foot among shophouse streets, cafés and food businesses. TAT describes a compact historic quarter; Thalang, Dibuk, Phang-nga and Krabi roads are useful names when comparing a listing's location with the streets you want to explore. A room elsewhere in Phuket Town is not necessarily in that walkable core.
Old Town suits a town-focused stay or a short addition to a beach holiday. It is a weak base if you want to walk from your room to the sea every morning. Plan one beach outing rather than assume town-to-beach travel will feel like moving between adjacent neighbourhoods.
For six nights, one possible split is two in Old Town followed by four in a beach area; this is an editorial allocation, not a requirement. For three nights, use the base that fits most of your days and make the other a visit. The Sunday Lat Yai market can be a reason to time an Old Town visit, but it is not a daily market to build every evening around.
TAT: Old Phuket Town streets, museums and Sunday Lat Yai marketAirport buses: the beach route and town services are different
Phuket Smart Bus's published airport-to-Rawai route serves Cherng Talay, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata before continuing south. Use that route when comparing beach-base arrivals. Old Town is not on the operator's listed airport-to-Rawai stop sequence, so do not board it assuming that it visits the historic centre first.
The operator separately lists a Bus Terminal 2–Phuket Town–Patong service and a Dragon Line city shuttle connecting Central Festival, Old Town and OTOP Market. Those routes answer different local journeys; they are not evidence of a direct airport-to-every-hotel service. Use the operator's current route and tracking pages for the correct stop and direction.
For a late flight, several suitcases or a hillside hotel, a prearranged road transfer may be the simpler purchase. For a bus arrival, include the final walk or local ride from the named stop when comparing the total cost. This guide does not turn an image-based timetable into a guaranteed connection or repeat an old tourism-page taxi fare as today's price.
Phuket Smart Bus: current route timetables and city-shuttle descriptionBefore booking: walking routes, swimming and the full stay cost
Compare the room's full-stay price together with airport transfers and the journeys you expect to repeat. A cheap Old Town room does not automatically save money on a beach-heavy holiday. A more expensive beach-area room may remove daily transfers, but only if the beach and meals are genuinely reachable from its entrance. We do not publish a universal room budget: dates, cancellation terms and location change the comparison.
A family-friendly description is not evidence of safe swimming. TAT specifically warns of serious undertows at Karon from May to October and strong monsoon waves at Surin. Follow the day's red flags and local instructions at every beach; choosing a different west-coast bay is not a reliable way to remove the seasonal risk. If swimming is central to the trip, settle the coast and month question before choosing a hotel.
If you are still deciding whether Phuket is the right island at all, compare it with a mainland Ao Nang stay or Ko Lanta before making an accommodation shortlist.
