Koh Phi Phi travel guide: day trip or overnight stay?

Choose a Phi Phi day trip for Maya Bay and island sightseeing, or stay on Phi Phi Don for island evenings. Compare Tonsai and Laemtong arrivals, crowd trade-offs and a two-night plan.

Is Phi Phi worth an overnight stay?

Choose a day trip if your main aim is to see the Phi Phi Le bays and return to the same Phuket or Krabi hotel. Stay on Phi Phi Don if you want island evenings, time around its beaches and a separate day for a boat excursion. Our default for an overnight visit is two nights: one arrival afternoon, one full day and departure the next day. That is a pacing recommendation, not a minimum stay.

Phi Phi Don is the accommodation island. Phi Phi Le, also written Leh, is the separate island associated with Maya Bay and Pileh Bay. A ferry ticket to Phi Phi Don is not a Maya Bay excursion. Likewise, a mainland day tour that stops on Don for lunch does not give you an evening there.

Tonsai or Laemtong: choose the arrival with the room

Tonsai Pier is the main arrival hub on Phi Phi Don. TAT describes the surrounding village as a concentration of shops, bars and restaurants. Choose the central area when easy access to meals and the arrival hub matters more than seclusion. If quiet sleep is important, the island name is not enough: examine the room location relative to the bars rather than assuming a beachfront address is quiet.

Laemtong, also spelled Leam Tong, is a different arrival on the northern part of Don. Andaman Wave Master describes access there by boat. It suits a stay centred on your beach accommodation, but it is not an interchangeable drop-off for a central Tonsai booking. Reserve the correct destination; arriving at Tonsai does not finish a transfer to a Laemtong property. The operator also asks Laemtong guests to confirm their return through hotel reception at least one day ahead.

Getting to Phi Phi from Phuket or Krabi

From Phuket, Andaman Wave Master lists large-ferry services from Rassada Pier to Tonsai, with a stated two-hour crossing. Its Laemtong service is listed as three hours. These are boat durations, not airport-to-room times. Rassada is on the Phuket Town side of the island; a west-coast beach hotel needs a road journey before boarding.

From Krabi, the operator lists Klong Jilad Pier to Tonsai. Klong Jilad is near Krabi Town, not Ao Nang beach. Its route page explicitly excludes land transfers from the ferry fare, so an Ao Nang room needs a separate ride to the correct departure. Compare the complete hotel-to-hotel journey rather than only the time at sea.

Choose the room first, then match the arrival pier and final luggage transfer. For an important flight home, our conservative recommendation is a final night on the departure mainland or Phuket rather than an unprotected same-day boat-to-flight connection. Published schedules can change; a listed route is not a confirmed seat for your date.

A two-night Phi Phi plan

Day 1: take the booked passenger transfer to your actual arrival point, leave luggage at the accommodation and spend the remaining afternoon locally. For a central stay, keep the evening around Tonsai village and its restaurants; for Laemtong, plan an evening at the beach accommodation rather than assuming a quick walk into the central village.

Day 2: use the full day for a Phi Phi Le excursion if the bays are your reason for coming. Choose a programme that distinguishes Maya Bay, Pileh and any snorkelling stops; the names do not describe the same activity. If you would rather stay on Don, make this a beach day instead. An early departure can change the timing, but it cannot promise an empty famous stop.

Day 3: leave time for checkout and the correct return boarding point. Do not fill the morning with a second fixed excursion before a ferry. For only one night, either the arrival or departure day may carry most of the sightseeing pressure; a day tour is often the cleaner option if seeing Phi Phi Le is the sole objective.

TAT Ko Phi Phi: island geography, village and beach choices

Maya Bay access and the best time to visit

TAT recommends November to April as the generally less rainy Phi Phi travel period. Its 20 October 2026 update reports that Maya Bay reopened on 1 October 2026 and warns that October and early November can still bring rain and high waves. That reopening is a dated report, not a guarantee that every site will remain accessible on a future departure.

The same TAT update says Phi Phi is among the marine parks using electronic tickets and advises advance purchase with a passport ready. When buying a tour, establish whether the operator arranges that admission or you must do so separately; a boat payment alone is not proof of park admission. Do not treat admission to Maya Bay as permission to swim there: follow the posted park rules and use only the swimming or snorkelling stops actually authorised for the day.

Budget for the passenger crossing or tour, accommodation if staying, any final beach transfer, meals and protected-area admission separately. A two-night stay is not automatically cheaper than a day tour once both crossings and an excursion are included. This guide does not quote a universal park fee or promise a particular tour is available.
