Krabi travel guide: a 3- or 5-night plan from Ao Nang

Use Ao Nang for a first Krabi stay, give Railay its own day and choose one island outing rather than filling every day with boats. Here is how to divide three or five nights, including a land-based alternative.

How many days do you need in Krabi?

For a first visit, three nights gives you an arrival afternoon, a Railay day and one other full day before departure. Five nights leaves room for one island outing, a mainland day and time without an excursion. These are our suggested allocations, not minimum stays. Use one room in Ao Nang unless sleeping on Railay is a specific reason for the trip. Krabi is a province as well as a town. This guide covers the mainland coast around Ao Nang, Railay and Krabi Town. Ko Lanta and Phi Phi are separate island stays, not extra neighbourhoods to fit into the same afternoon. Ao Nang is the practical starting point for a short beach-focused visit; Krabi Town is a different booking inland from that strip.

Three nights: arrival, Railay and one open day

Day 1: travel to your Ao Nang accommodation, leave the luggage and use the remaining afternoon for the beach strip and dinner. Do not book a fixed boat departure immediately after the inbound flight. A late arrival still leaves two full days with this allocation. Day 2: make Railay the main outing. Take a passenger boat from Ao Nang when conditions allow, spend the first part of the visit around Railay West, then walk across to Railay East and towards Phra Nang. Railay East is a mangrove-side arrival area, not the equivalent of the West beach for swimming. Settle the return arrangement before starting the walk and leave time to reach the correct landing. You do not need to add a climbing session or a second island to make this a full day. Day 3: choose a nearby-island excursion if that is a priority and the trip can run, or go into Krabi Town for the riverfront and meals. If you mainly want a rest, keep the day in Ao Nang instead. Day 4 is checkout and onward travel, not a third full excursion day. If the only suitable Railay weather is on day 3, swap the two full days rather than treat the order as fixed.

Five nights: add a mainland day and keep some slack

Day 1 is arrival in Ao Nang. Use day 2 for Railay and Phra Nang, then day 3 for one island excursion. Keep day 4 land-based: either Krabi Town for a lighter day or the Khlong Thom area for Emerald Pool and a hot-springs outing. TAT lists Emerald Pool and Namtok Ron as separate attractions; arrange road transport for the complete day rather than assuming an island-tour pickup covers them. Leave day 5 for the beach, a missed outing or simply a free day. Depart on day 6. This gives a cancelled boat trip somewhere to move without making a second sea excursion compulsory. It also avoids treating all five nights as five full sightseeing days. For the five-night coast block in our two-week Thailand route, this is a useful mainland version. A Railay hotel changes both transfer days, but does not require a completely different sightseeing list. Stay there because you want mornings and evenings on the peninsula, not because a day visit is impossible.

Railay transport: Ao Nang and Ao Nammao are different departures

Railay has no road connection. From Krabi Airport, an Ao Nang hotel is a road transfer; a Railay hotel adds a boat and a final luggage journey. For a day visit from Ao Nang, the western beach departure is the straightforward starting point when the sea allows. Travelfish's February 2026 transport guide describes beach landings without a pier on the western side, so expect a different boarding experience from a ferry terminal. Ao Nammao is a separate mainland departure serving Railay East's floating pier. Travelfish identifies this eastern approach as generally more sheltered in the low season, while also noting that services can be reduced. That is a useful alternative access point, not a promise that a boat will operate in unsafe weather. For a Railay overnight stay, reserve the actual airport-to-property transfer, including the landing and luggage help, rather than buying only a road ride to a beach. Shared longtails may wait for passengers. Do not treat a quoted crossing time as the entire journey or depend on an assumed late-night shared departure. For an important onward flight, our conservative choice is a final night with road access rather than a tight, unprotected boat-to-flight connection.

Island days: nearby islands, Hong and Phi Phi are not one trip

Thale Waek and the islands off Ao Nang belong to the nearby-island choice; the exposed sand connection at Thale Waek depends on the tide. Hong Island is a separate excursion direction in Than Bok Khorani National Park. Phi Phi is a different island group, with accommodation on Phi Phi Don and protected visitor sites around Phi Phi Le. Choose the destination you actually want rather than the tour with the longest list of stops. For three nights, one island outing is enough alongside Railay. For five nights, a second boat day is optional rather than necessary. This overview does not certify a particular park's current opening dates, boat product or access fee. Before paying for an excursion, the offer needs to name the destination, boarding point, included park charges and cancellation terms. Do not assume a general Krabi booking includes permission to visit every protected site.

When boats cannot run, change the day rather than the safety margin

Krabi follows the Andaman coast's weather pattern, not Samui's Gulf pattern. If boat outings are the main reason for coming, choose the coast and month before buying accommodation. A mainland room preserves road access when a sea excursion changes; it does not make swimming safe in rough conditions. Follow beach flags and local closure instructions. Use a disrupted day for Krabi Town, meals and time at your accommodation. Emerald Pool and the hot springs are alternatives to a boat day in suitable conditions, not guaranteed bad-weather refuges: heavy rain can also affect outdoor mainland visits. Avoid moving every cancelled activity to the morning of your flight.
