Is Railay Beach better as a day trip or an overnight stay?
A day trip from Ao Nang is our default for a short Krabi holiday: visit Railay, keep the mainland room and avoid moving luggage through another boat transfer. Stay on Railay if you want the peninsula to be your base rather than one outing. Two or three nights is a useful editorial starting point for a stay, not a rule.
Railay is a peninsula cut off from road access by cliffs, not an island with a road bridge. Every normal hotel arrival includes a boat. That is the central booking difference from Ao Nang, even if the crossing itself is short.

| Your decision | Useful for | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Ao Nang to West Railay | An independent day visit from an Ao Nang base. | The boat reaches the west side; the beach landing can involve sand and wet boarding. |
| Ao Nam Mao to East Railay | An airport-to-pier journey or an east-side hotel arrival. | East Railay is a different landing from the west-side beach. |
| Hotel-arranged transfer | A named property, luggage assistance or an agreed late-arrival plan. | Use that hotel’s specified pier; Rayavadee names Nong Nuch for its service. |
West Railay, East Railay and Phra Nang
Use West Railay as the first orientation point for an Ao Nang beach visit. East Railay is a separate arrival side, not another name for the same beach. Phra Nang is another beach on the peninsula; plan to spend time there rather than assuming you have seen the whole area at the boat landing.
For accommodation, a Railay address alone does not tell you which side you sleep on or where your boat arrives. Send the hotel the booked landing and ask for the final luggage route. Do not use a resort’s private grounds as an assumed public shortcut. A day visitor should use the public paths and leave time to return to the agreed boat departure point.
Rayavadee: Phra Nang peninsula location and resort arrival informationHow to get to Railay from Ao Nang or Krabi Airport
From Ao Nang, arrange the longtail crossing to West Railay. Railay Eco Tour gives an approximate 15–20-minute boat leg from Ao Nang and 10–15 minutes from Ao Nam Mao to the east side. Those are that operator’s journey estimates, not a fixed timetable or complete hotel-to-hotel duration. Shared departures can involve waiting for passengers; a private charter is a different purchase.
From Krabi Airport, book a car or van to the correct mainland pier, then the boat. The same operator estimates roughly one to one and a half hours for the combined airport-to-Railay journey including a boat wait. Leave more room for baggage collection, delays and the final hotel approach. Do not apply Rayavadee’s own pier-transfer timing to every Railay property.
For a late flight, our conservative choice is a mainland first night unless the receiving hotel has accepted the flight and arranged the full onward transfer. Railay Village advertises advance-booked day and night services; that does not establish an open public boat queue all night.
Railay Eco Tour: named piers and approximate transfer legsA usable Railay day from Ao Nang
Go in the morning when sea conditions permit, having agreed the return arrangements before leaving Ao Nang. Start at West Railay, continue on the public walking route towards the east side and Phra Nang, and keep the afternoon for beach time and lunch rather than adding another island excursion. Return to the agreed landing with time to spare.
This is an editorial sequence, not a timed tour. On arrival, confirm the usable public route and any local restrictions; do not assume a mapped shortcut through a hotel is available. If your boat uses a different landing because of conditions, revise the walk and return plan.
Sunset changes the logistics. A late return may need a different ticket or pre-arranged private service. A daytime outward ride is not proof that a return boat will wait after dark. Choose an overnight stay if late peninsula time is the main objective and you do not want that return journey.
TAT: Ao Nang as the launching point for Railay and Phra NangIf you stay: keep the first and last days simple
For a two-night stay, arrive and settle in on the first day, keep the middle day for the peninsula, then leave enough time for the boat and land transfer on departure day. A third night gives another local day without another hotel move. These are pacing suggestions; they do not guarantee a crossing or a flight connection.
Carry essentials and electronics in a waterproof inner bag. Longtail boarding can require lifting bags and stepping onto sand or into shallow water. With mobility needs, a baby or several suitcases, obtain the exact boarding method and assistance from the booked provider before committing. The destination label does not establish accessible transport.
Climbing is a separate booking decision. Do not add a scramble, viewpoint ascent or technical climb to an ordinary beach walk on the assumption that a tourist path is easy. Use a suitable guided session if climbing is the purpose; this guide does not certify climbing routes or equipment.
Railay Village Resort: arrival services and activity optionsWhat should the transfer quote include?
Obtain a quote for the complete party and direction: airport or hotel pickup, mainland pier, boat, Railay landing and help to the property. Establish whether the amount is per person or per vehicle/boat, and whether a return, a night surcharge or a private charter is included. A shared day-boat ticket is not comparable with a private van-and-boat hotel transfer.
We do not reproduce a universal Railay fare here. Railay Village’s transport page contains differing price tables, so it is not a sound basis for a single public ticket price. Use a dated quote for the actual service rather than combining figures from different tables.
Sea conditions can change a planned landing or prevent a crossing. Keep boat outings flexible, and choose Ao Nang instead if reliable road access to the room matters more than sleeping on the peninsula.
