Koh Chang vs Koh Kood: which island should you choose?

Choose Koh Chang for more beach-base and outing choices, or Koh Kood for a quieter stay centred on one beach. Compare arrivals, transport, evenings and a split stay.

Choose Chang for variety, Kood for a beach-led stay

Choose Koh Chang if you want to compare several developed beach areas and use one base for different outing days. Choose Koh Kood if the main job of the trip is to stay by a beach, take a few local trips and keep evenings quieter. Neither choice removes the mainland journey or the island transfer to your hotel.

For a first visit without a scooter, Koh Chang’s White Sand Beach is a useful starting point for comparing access to food and services. On Koh Kood, start with Khlong Chao for a beach-and-river stay or Bang Bao for a bay-focused hotel. On both islands, the precise room position matters more than an island-wide promise of convenience.

Arrival: the ferry and hotel transfer are different choices

For Koh Chang, Boonsiri’s access guide describes a road approach to Ao Thammachat and a car-ferry crossing. Its booking interface distinguishes Ao Sapparot from Bang Bao on the island. A journey booked to the northern arrival pier is not a direct arrival at a southern-coast room.

For Koh Kood, the relevant mainland passenger-boat gateway is Laem Sok. Ao Salad pier and a Koh Kood hotel-transfer endpoint are separate choices in Boonsiri’s interface. If you are flying to Trat, neither island is the airport: add the appropriate road leg, crossing and hotel transfer.

Do not decide from the flight time or boat duration alone. Compare the whole door-to-door route from your Bangkok hotel or airport arrival. A through ticket can simplify responsibility for connected legs, but it does not make a separate international flight a protected connection.

Which is easier without a scooter?

Koh Chang is the more useful first comparison when you want a choice of service-oriented beach areas. White Sand, Klong Prao, Kai Bae and Lonely Beach offer different stays; choosing the island is only the first step. A quiet room outside a restaurant area can still require arranged rides for meals. The longer west-coast journeys should be planned as vehicle trips.

Koh Kood works without riding if you choose the beach you actually want to use and budget for a few arranged outings. Khlong Chao gives you a beach-and-river focus; Bang Bao makes sense when you want to spend more time at the bay. Avoid a plan based on moving between beaches by frequent scheduled public transport.

For either island, ask for the hotel-to-beach walking route, not just the map distance. Roadside, hillside, riverfront and beachfront rooms are not equivalent. Couples sharing a room and families needing a larger vehicle should compare actual quotes rather than a nominal per-person island budget.

Outings and evenings: how much variety do you need?

Koh Chang is a stronger fit for a stay mixing beach days with different land outings. TAT names Klong Plu Waterfall and Bang Bao alongside White Sand Beach. Choose an outing day for the interior and another for the south rather than driving the length of the coast every day. Access to an attraction still depends on its current conditions.

Koh Kood suits fewer moves: beach time, kayaking on the Khlong Chao waterway, a waterfall visit and perhaps Ao Yai fishing village. A snorkelling trip can add a boat day, but should remain weather-dependent rather than the sole reason for a short stay.

Choose Chang if evening choice is an important part of the holiday, then choose the actual area rather than assuming every beach is lively. Choose Kood if a quiet dinner and staying near the hotel are acceptable most nights. Neither recommendation is a claim that one island has no restaurants or that every bar operates throughout the year.

Can you visit both islands on one trip?

Yes, if you have enough nights and a confirmed transfer for the actual direction and date. An example nine-night island block is five nights on Koh Chang followed by four on Koh Kood. That gives four full days on Chang and three on Kood, with the change day reserved for travel. These are editorial pacing choices.

Do not assume the direct inter-island boat runs because both names appear in a booking selector. Boonsiri names Koh Chang Bang Bao and Koh Kood Ao Salad, but availability, intermediate calls and hotel pickup coverage require a dated result. If the direct journey is unavailable, a mainland routing involves separate island crossings and a road transfer between the appropriate piers; it is not a quick substitute to insert without rebuilding the day.

With only four or five island nights, choose one island. Splitting the block spends too much of the useful stay on a second packing, pickup and crossing. Keep a mainland or Bangkok night before a separate long-haul flight regardless of which island comes last.

Season and cost: neither island wins automatically

Both islands are in the Trat region, so switching between them is not a dependable way to escape the same regional wet-weather period. TAT recommends November–February for Koh Kood; November remains a transition to assess against your actual crossing. A general dry-season label does not guarantee calm sea conditions.

Compare equivalent baskets before calling one island cheaper: the same number of room nights, similar beach access, meals, both transfers and the outings you would actually book. A cheaper remote room on Kood can lose its advantage if every meal and beach change requires a vehicle. A more central Chang room may save local trips but still have a longer arrival transfer depending on its location.

Choose Chang if you value variety enough to use it. Choose Kood if staying at the chosen beach for several days is the holiday you want; do not pay for a second island only to make the itinerary look fuller.
