Krabi 4 island tour or Hong Island: which should you choose?

Choose the Krabi 4 island tour for Poda, Chicken and the Tub sandbank; choose Hong for its lagoon and viewpoint. Compare routes, boat types, pickup and park-fee exclusions.

Choose the stops, not the number of islands

Choose a Krabi 4 island tour for the nearby Poda, Chicken and Tub/Thale Waek circuit, often combined with Phra Nang on the Railay peninsula. Choose Hong Island if the lagoon and the island viewpoint are the main attraction. If you already have a full Railay day planned, Hong gives you a more distinct second outing; if Poda and the tidal sandbank are priorities, choose the four-island route.

These are different excursion directions, not two names for the same trip. Phi Phi is a third option farther from the mainland, with its own bays and transfer considerations. For a three-night Ao Nang stay, our recommendation is Railay plus one island excursion, leaving the order flexible for conditions.

What a Krabi 4 island tour actually visits

Barracudas Tour publishes an example route starting at Ao Nang, then Phra Nang Cave, snorkelling off Chicken Island, lunch on Poda and a stop at Tub before returning. The tour name is shorthand: Phra Nang is on the Railay peninsula, while the Thale Waek sand connection involves the small neighbouring islands. Do not expect four identical island landings.

The sandbank is a tidal feature. TAT describes it appearing as the tide recedes, connecting Ko Kai, Ko Thap and Ko Mo. A brochure time for Tub does not guarantee that the sand connection will be exposed during your visit. Treat the order as adjustable, and do not wade across a submerged connection just to reproduce a photograph.

This is the better choice when the named nearby-island stops are what you want. It is less compelling if your main goal is a long, independent Phra Nang beach day: the tour divides the day among several stops, whereas a separate Railay visit lets you stay on the peninsula.

What Hong adds: lagoon, beach and an optional viewpoint

Barracudas publishes a Hong route via Daeng Island for snorkelling, Hong Island and its 360 viewpoint, lunch on Lao Lading and a visit inside Hong Lagoon. TAT places Hong in Than Bok Khorani National Park. The beach and the enclosed lagoon are distinct parts of the excursion; compare whether both are included rather than buying on the word Hong alone.

The viewpoint is an optional walk, not something you must do to justify the tour. If you want beach time, choose a programme that allows it instead of assuming you can finish every advertised activity during a short stop. A list including Daeng, Lao Lading or Pak Bia is an operator-specific route, not a compulsory park circuit.

Hong is our stronger choice after a separate Railay day if your interest is limestone island scenery and a lagoon. It is not a promise of solitude or better snorkelling visibility. Both trips share their stops with other boats, and conditions can change the water experience.

Longtail, speedboat or private charter?

Both routes are sold by longtail and speedboat. Choose a longtail when the traditional open-boat trip is part of what you want; choose a speedboat for that product’s itinerary and boarding arrangements, not on an assumption that it is always smoother or safer. On either type, steps, beach boarding and movement between boat and shore can matter more than the tour name for someone with limited mobility.

A private charter buys control over your group and potentially the time at each stop, within the agreed programme. It does not buy private access to Poda, Hong or the lagoon. A shared trip is simpler for a solo traveller or couple who do not need that flexibility. Compare a per-person ticket with a whole-boat price using the same passenger count and inclusions.

If travelling with a small child, establish that an appropriately sized life jacket and workable boarding help are provided. Someone who cannot comfortably board the stated boat should not treat a faster crossing as a solution. Follow crew and park restrictions rather than insisting on a scheduled stop in unsuitable conditions.

Pickup and costs: the exclusions can change the choice

Ao Nang is the straightforward base for these published programmes. Barracudas lists Ao Nang car pickup as included for both. Krabi Town and Klong Muang pickups carry a surcharge. Its four-island page offers Railay pickup only for the speedboat product, while its Hong page says Railay pickup is not available. A Railay hotel therefore cannot assume the same pickup arrangement as an Ao Nang room. These are this operator’s terms, checked on 25 October 2026, not rules for every boat company.

Both detailed tour pages exclude national-park entrance charges from the base ticket, and list lunch, mask and snorkel, life jacket, drinking water and Ao Nang transfer among the inclusions. Compare the final ticket plus park admission and any pickup surcharge, not just the starting price on a tour card. The Hong and nearby-island routes do not necessarily carry the same admission charge.

The operator’s published terms allow a route or destination change for wind and waves. They also distinguish an operator cancellation, for which a reschedule or refund can be agreed, from a traveller cancelling late. Read those terms before paying, and leave this as a movable day rather than the morning of an onward flight. A national-park fee line on a seller’s page is not a blanket access guarantee.
