Phuket travel guide: a 3- or 5-night plan without daily hotel moves
Spend three nights in Phuket for a beach base and an Old Town visit, or five for a slower stay with a flexible excursion day. Group outings by coast rather than crossing the island repeatedly.
How many nights in Phuket?
Three nights work if Phuket is your beach stop within a longer Thailand trip: arrive, keep one full day for your beach and use the other for Old Town. Five nights give you room for a southern-island outing, an optional boat excursion and a day that can move with the weather. These are suggested allocations, not minimum stays. Stay in one place for a short visit. Kata or Karon makes sense for a beach-led trip; Patong suits travellers who want nightlife within their own base. Old Town suits food, streets and town evenings, but requires a separate journey to a west-coast beach. A three-night stay split between town and beach usually sacrifices too much time to packing and transfers.

| Compare | Three nights | Five nights |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | One beach base, or Old Town if town time is the priority | One base still works; split only for a clear town-and-beach preference |
| Full-day priorities | One beach day and one Old Town outing | Beach day, Old Town day, southern outing and flexible excursion/rest day |
| Boat trip | Substitute for a planned day rather than adding it on arrival or departure | Keep an uncommitted day so a cancellation does not consume the whole stay |
| Transport spending | Airport transfers plus the town outing | Add a grouped southern road outing or an excursion, not daily cross-island taxis |
Arrival day and day 2: settle into your beach base
On arrival, travel directly to the hotel and keep the remaining time local. The airport–Rawai Smart Bus route serves Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata before continuing south. It does not list Old Town as a stop on that route. Pick the bus for a hotel near a served stop; a hillside room or a late arrival may make a door-to-door transfer more useful. Use day 2 for the beach and the immediate neighbourhood. From Kata, keep the day around Kata rather than combining it with a trip to Kamala in the north. From Karon, choose a nearby section of beach and dinner in the same area. Patong visitors can keep beach time and the evening in one district. The point of this first full day is to avoid paying for transport simply to reach another version of the base you already chose.

Make Old Town a single outing with time for food and walking, rather than a brief stop between distant beaches. Thalang Road, Dibuk Road, Phang Nga Road and Soi Rommanee give you a compact street circuit; leave time for the side streets rather than trying to tick off every building. TAT identifies Thai Hua Museum and Peranakan Nithat Museum as options if you want an indoor stop. If your visit includes Sunday, TAT lists the Lat Yai walking market in Old Town. Put the town outing on that day if the market matters to you, and arrange the return journey before settling into the evening. Otherwise, a normal afternoon and early dinner still gives the town a useful place in a beach holiday. A market visit does not require moving hotels.

Use the next full day for a road outing to Wat Chalong and the southern coast. Start with the temple, continue towards Rawai for a meal, then visit Laem Phromthep if conditions suit. This sequence keeps the outing in the south; it does not need a detour to Surin or the airport side of the island. Dress for a working temple, not just a beach stop. Keep the final full day for either more time at your own beach or one boat excursion. Choose the excursion by the actual destination and departure pier before you pay: hotel pickup, road transfer and the sea trip are separate parts of the day. Do not assume a ticket advertised as a Phuket trip leaves from the beach outside your hotel. Leave the evening before an onward flight free of an essential island-to-mainland connection.

Use the west-coast Smart Bus when its stops match both ends of your journey. Its published route links several beach districts, but a stop list is not a door-to-door island network. Use the operator timetable and live tracker for the travel day rather than assuming frequent departures or a quick journey through traffic. For Old Town or a multi-stop southern outing, compare a direct transfer with a car and driver for the intended stops. Get the total price, waiting time and return arrangement together. Walking works within parts of each resort district; it does not turn Kata, Karon, Kamala and Old Town into one walkable area. Check the hotel entrance on a map, especially if the listing shows a sea view from a hillside.

For the west coast, the wetter monsoon period can bring rough water as well as rain. TAT specifically warns against swimming at Surin during monsoon storms and strong waves. Follow the flags and local instructions at the beach you are using; a sunny interval does not establish safe sea conditions. If a boat outing is cancelled, swap in Old Town or keep a local rest day instead of chasing another sea departure. Do not make an excursion your only route to an essential onward flight. On departure day, plan around the airport transfer rather than adding a last distant beach stop. Phuket and Krabi are alternative bases, not adjacent districts of the same resort.
