Phuket or Krabi: choose the base, not just the destination
Phuket is our starting choice if you want a beach hotel reached by road, a choice of established resort areas and time in Phuket Old Town. Krabi is our choice if Railay, limestone-cliff scenery and boat outings from Ao Nang are the main reasons for the coastal leg. For a first visit without a scooter, compare a walkable pocket of Kata or Patong with central Ao Nang before comparing isolated resorts.
Krabi is a province, not one beach. Ao Nang has road access; Railay needs a boat; Krabi Town is a town base rather than a beachfront substitute. Phuket is also too large to treat as one neighbourhood. The hotel location will change your holiday more than an island-versus-mainland label.

| Your decision | Phuket | Krabi |
|---|---|---|
| Road-access beach stay | Compare Kata, Karon, Kamala or Patong; select the actual hotel pocket. | Choose Ao Nang or another mainland coastal base; Railay adds a boat. |
| Nightlife-led break | Start with Patong rather than a secluded northern resort. | Ao Nang has bars and restaurants, but do not choose Railay expecting Patong. |
| Boat outings | Possible excursions, but a beach-and-town holiday need not depend on them. | Ao Nang is a launching point for nearby islands and the Railay peninsula. |
| Town time | Old Town adds architecture and meals away from the beach strip. | Krabi Town suits town evenings but is a separate base from Ao Nang. |
| Short coastal leg | Keep one hotel and visit another area as an outing. | Keep one Ao Nang hotel and visit Railay, unless sleeping on Railay is a priority. |
Beaches and evenings: Kata or Patong versus Ao Nang
Shortlist Kata or Karon for a Phuket beach-area stay, Patong when busy evenings are part of the brief, and Kamala if that beach and its accommodation fit better. None is a promise of quiet: look at the room’s actual road frontage, neighbouring venues and walking route to dinner. A north-coast resort is a different choice from a hotel near Patong nightlife.
Ao Nang suits a Krabi stay with restaurants, excursion meeting points and optional boat days in the same area. It is a working tourism base, not an empty beach. Railay is the more distinct stay if you want to remain on the peninsula after a day visit would end, accepting a boat-dependent arrival and departure.
TAT: Phuket beaches, architecture and nightlifeArrival: a beach hotel does not always need a ferry
You can reach Phuket’s main beach resorts by road from Phuket Airport; the word island does not mean a boat is required. In Krabi, a hotel in Ao Nang is also a road arrival, but a Railay booking means a vehicle-to-pier stage followed by a boat. That extra stage matters with a late flight, children or heavy bags.
Railay Eco Tour distinguishes Ao Nam Mao for East Railay from Ao Nang for West Railay. Hotel-organised transfers can use different arrangements: Rayavadee, for example, names Nong Nuch pier for its own service. Book the route to the exact property rather than asking a driver for a generic Railay drop. These are different products, not interchangeable public ferry stops.
Railay Eco Tour: airport, pier and Railay arrival choicesFamilies and a trip without a scooter
For a family wanting few luggage moves, choose one road-access hotel with meals close by. That can be Phuket or Ao Nang. A beach-address hotel can still be on a steep approach or far from restaurants, so inspect the final walk rather than assuming a whole resort area is easy on foot.
Railay is worth the extra boarding when staying there is a main purpose. It is less useful as a way to simplify a late airport arrival. Reserve the complete luggage transfer if you stay, and keep mainland accommodation as the fallback when a crossing cannot operate. Neither destination requires you to learn to ride a scooter to have a workable holiday.
Railay Village Resort: combined van-and-boat arrivalsWeather and cost: neither has a universal advantage
Phuket and Krabi are both on the Andaman side. Switching between them is not a reliable way to avoid a regional wet spell. Use the travel month to decide whether this coast fits, and leave boat excursions flexible in rough conditions. A road-access hotel removes a boat from the hotel journey, not the effect of weather on swimming. TAT specifically reminds Phuket visitors to heed red flags.
For cost, compare the same dated basket: room, meals, airport transfer, local rides and any boat trips. Include both boat and land legs for Railay. This guide does not claim Krabi is always cheaper or publish a daily average without actual room and transfer quotes.
TAT: Phuket geography and swimming-flag adviceHow many nights, and is it worth visiting both?
For three or four coastal nights, choose one. In Phuket, use a beach day, an Old Town outing and another local day. In Krabi, keep an Ao Nang base with a Railay visit and a separate optional island outing. Do not make both excursion days boat-dependent if the forecast is unsettled.
With seven coastal nights and a reason to see both, an editorial starting split is four on Phuket and three in Krabi. Treat the move as a travel day and compare the actual road or boat product for the dates; a quoted crossing is not hotel-to-hotel time. If you mainly want beach downtime, all seven nights in one base can be better.
Keep the last night near the airport you will use rather than placing an unprotected sea transfer immediately before an important flight. The allocations here are pacing suggestions, not minimum stays or a bookable package.
