7 day Thailand itinerary: a Bangkok week or a Phuket beach base

With seven days, choose a city-and-temples week based in Bangkok or six nights on Phuket. Both plans leave five full days between arrival and departure, without internal flights or hotel changes.

Choose one base for a seven-day Thailand trip

For a seven-day Thailand itinerary, choose Bangkok if food, city neighbourhoods and a day in Ayutthaya matter most; choose Phuket if the beach is the main reason for travelling. Each plan below has seven days and six nights in one accommodation base. Days 1 and 7 are arrival and departure days, so there are five full days to use.

These are suggested schedules, not packages or a claim that you must stay exactly six nights. They assume your travel arrangements bring you to the chosen base on day 1 and take you away on day 7. If your international ticket requires a separate domestic connection, add that journey to the plan before booking excursions. Seven days in Thailand is different from a seven-day holiday that also includes the flights from home.

For a northern-only week, use the separate Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai itinerary rather than duplicating it here. Do not combine all three options into one week.

Bangkok days 1–3: arrive, old city and a second neighbourhood

Day 1: transfer to your Bangkok hotel and keep the first walk close to it. If you arrive late, dinner and sleep are sufficient. Sleep in Bangkok.

Day 2: visit the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew in the morning, then decide whether you have the energy for Wat Pho or would prefer lunch and a river trip. This is a full old-city day, not the time for an additional cross-country transfer. The Grand Palace requires appropriate clothing; do not arrive in shorts or a sleeveless top expecting entry. Sleep in Bangkok.

Day 3: choose the riverside and a separate neighbourhood rather than repeating the palace circuit. A practical pairing is a river outing followed by Chinatown for food. Keep the afternoon lighter if the previous day was tiring. Your hotel area affects how much transport this involves: a Sukhumvit base and an old-city base do not produce the same daily journey. Sleep in Bangkok.

Bangkok days 4–7: Ayutthaya, flexible days and departure

Day 4: take a return trip to Ayutthaya. Start with Wat Mahathat and Wat Ratchaburana, then choose Wat Phra Si Sanphet as another main stop rather than trying to visit every ruin. Arrange local transport if you do not want to cycle between sites. Wat Chaiwatthanaram can replace a stop if the riverside setting is your priority; it is a separate move, not an adjoining room of the same temple complex. Return to Bangkok and sleep there.

Day 5: keep a slower Bangkok day. Use it for neighbourhood walks, food and rest, or swap it with Ayutthaya if the weather makes the exposed ruins less appealing. Do not replace the buffer with another distant province simply because the calendar has a free square. Sleep in Bangkok.

Day 6: finish the city visit you most wanted but have not done. Return to the riverside, give Chinatown more time or choose a specific museum based on its opening day. Keep any market visit tied to its actual operating day rather than promising that a weekend market works on every date. Sleep in Bangkok for the sixth night.

Day 7: transfer to your departure airport or station. Plan around the exact terminal and check-in requirement. Do not book Ayutthaya or a full temple circuit before a tightly timed departure.

Phuket days 1–3: settle at the beach, then visit Old Town

Day 1: transfer to your chosen Phuket base and stay nearby for dinner. Choose Kata or Karon for a beach-led week; Patong suits travellers who want its busier evening setting. Old Town is a different kind of stay and is not a beachfront substitute. Sleep at the same Phuket base on all six nights.

Day 2: keep the day at your local beach and adjust swimming to the flags and conditions on the day. There is no need to cross the island to prove that you have started sightseeing. This is the least demanding day after travel.

Day 3: make a separate Old Phuket Town outing for its streets, food and buildings. TAT identifies Thalang, Krabi, Dibuk and Phang-nga among the town’s historic streets. Choose a few streets and a long lunch rather than moving between several distant beaches on the same day. Return to your beach hotel. If a Sunday market matters to you, reorder the week to put Old Town on that evening; the plan does not assume day 3 is Sunday.

Phuket days 4–7: a land outing, an optional boat day and spare time

Day 4: arrange a land-based outing around Wat Chalong and the southern part of the island. Add Laem Phromthep if conditions and the day’s timing suit it, but do not turn a sunset stop into an obligation to drive every coastal road. Tell the driver your hotel area when agreeing the return journey.

Day 5: choose one boat outing only if its route, current operation and sea conditions suit your group. Phi Phi is an optional full-day excursion, not an extra hotel move hidden inside this plan. If you would rather avoid a long boat day, stay at the beach or use another town visit. No particular departure, wildlife sighting or swimming stop is guaranteed here.

Day 6: keep a final unbooked day at the base. It gives you another beach day or room to move a weather-dependent outing. Do not schedule your only boat excursion here if a cancellation would make you feel that the whole week failed.

Day 7: leave by road for the airport with the transfer allowance appropriate to your exact hotel and flight. Avoid making a return ferry from another island the first leg of an inflexible flight connection.

What to book, and what to leave flexible

For either version, price six accommodation nights, airport or station transfers, meals, local transport and the selected admissions or activities. For Bangkok, add the complete Ayutthaya return journey and transport between its sights. For Phuket, add cross-island road transport and any boat package, including its admission exclusions. These plans do not require an internal flight or an overnight ferry once you reach the selected base.

Book the accommodation area before selecting excursions: six nights in the wrong neighbourhood is a larger compromise than omitting one attraction. Keep at least one day movable. Compare cancellation terms for weather-dependent trips rather than assuming that a cancelled sailing or a change of mind qualifies for the same refund. This is a booking basket, not an invented per-person daily budget.

When should you split the week instead?

Split seven days only when two places matter more than slower time in either, and count the move as part of the holiday. Bangkok plus Phuket needs another travel leg and at least one hotel change. Phi Phi plus Phuket adds boat logistics and another luggage move. Neither is an extra destination for free.

If you have already paid for a flight through Bangkok, a short stop may be sensible, but remove days from the beach schedule explicitly rather than claiming to keep the complete plan above. For a first trip with a city, the north and a coast all on the wish list, use a longer holiday or choose what to leave for another visit.
